LEED AP Changes
I poured over a fellow intern's literature he got from Greenbuild 2008 in D.C. and expect for me to sort through that stuff some day soon... the blogging gene is flowing heavily and I have a mountain of links to sort!!!
Fellow colleagues went to Greenbuild this year as well and came back with their updates. Maybe next year I can go (I just have to!). The first link does summarize the upcoming changes. This is a great thought for the next year as well. Here goes becoming a LEED for Homes AP woo hoo!
The Perfect Storm
These days, I'm trying to focus on the big and the small picture at the same time, while trying to keep my head screwed on as tightly.
My dream job is still being an alternative building instructor. Just stay tuned, we'll get there.
Obamarama
I'm even more giddy that energy efficiency is part of his plan.
I was speechless yesterday when I heard that the Transition Team called the Executive Director of my job (Southface Energy Institute in Atlanta, GA) asked to speak with him about energy policy. Isn't that stunning? My mind's mouth dropped open.
The American Dream is alive and well, just like he said. Thanks America! I feel like living here now, for once in a very long time.
Crazy Busy, but Happy
This is my fun way of chronicling sustainability... gotta have that in my life! Work provides a lot, but that says something when I enjoy it in my free time as well (ha!).
Use the Sun, Duh!
I'm looking forward to walls becoming like human skin and thin film solar is a step in that direction.
A solar car made it around the world!

Building Analyst Training
I will let you know the results once they are mailed to me. Can't wait!
Ikea
"Ikea GreenTech plans to focus on five areas — solar panels, alternative light sources, product materials, energy efficiency, and water saving and purification."
Also, I didn't know Ikea manufacturers pre-fab homes in Europe as well. Makes sense though:
"Empyrean's Turkel believes that Ikea -- whose worldwide sales totaled $15.5 billion in 2004 -- helped build the market for prefab homes. After all, homes made from a kit have the same quasi-do-it-yourself, modular quality and streamlined design as an Ikea bookshelf or chair, albeit on a larger scale. Ikea also proved that inexpensive products don't have to look cheap."
Bail-out Tax Incentives
One of my favorites is the following:
"The bill extends for another eight years a tax credit that covers 30 percent of the cost of new photovoltaic solar power systems on homes.
The existing tax credit, which was capped at $2,000, would have expired at the end of 2008. Now, it's good through 2016 - and there's no longer a dollar cap on the 30 percent rebate."
Don't forget to check State Incentives and Assistance Project too.Sunday, October 19, 2008
From Crap to Bling
"9 Unusual Alternative Energy Options."
The price of a barrel of oil is high, which causes these experiments and ideas... but gas has been going down, maybe not low enough like it was two decades ago. I really hope people start to think of the long term and really want to become independent of foreign energy sources as soon as possible. Like most industries, it'll have to be the government that subsidizes alternative energy so that it can compete with oil, etc... Exciting times! Can't wait until I have a vehicle that runs on solar, like the one just made in China.

Cheap Solar in a Decade
Until solar is cheap, why not rent from a company?
Also, that giant bail-out package renewed solar's tax credits.
I can tell I'm going to continue adding onto this particular post because today I just read how solar cells are even becoming much more efficient.

San Francisco Green Building
Here is the first paragraph to just give you an idea of the new policy adoption:
"Ordinance amending the San Francisco Building Code by adding Chapter 13C to impose green building requirements on newly constructed residential buildings, newly constructed commercial buildings that are 5,000 gross square feet or more, alterations to new or existing commercial interiors that are 25,000 gross square feet or more in area, and major alterations to existing buildings that are 25,000 gross square feet or more in area, where interior finishes are removed and significant upgrades to structural and mechanical, electrical and/or plumbing systems are proposed; exempting City projects, which are covered by Chapter 7 of the San Francisco Environment Code; providing that the requirements become effective 90 days after enactment of the ordinance and increase over the following five-year period; adopting findings, including environmental findings and findings required by California Health and Safety Code Section 17958.5."
Read the rest here. Building codes can be interesting!

Building in Europe
Europe has the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive
Maybe my dream of moving to Europe and having a career do not seem as far fetched...
Britain has a Code for Sustainable Homes as well.
California is paving the way with their Green Building Initiative as well.
Germany is leading the way with Passivhaus or Passive House.
This is only a glimpse at the world phenomenon happening and these are very exciting times. Hope more articles like this come my way!

Striving for Excellence
Striving for Excellence
For as long as I can remember, I always knew I belong in the construction industry. Living in a house that I could call home did not happen until I was seventeen and I am still grateful for that. Volunteering for Habitat for Humanity was not possible in my district, so when I finished college, I decided that learning to build a house in Jacksonville, FL would be a dream come true. The experience of helping a family build their own house, getting to know them, and seeing progress each and every day truly inspired me along with all the hundreds of volunteers I came to know. All of this took place in Jacksonville as a member of the Americorps, a highly valuable government program that makes a difference in communities throughout all of America.
A natural transition for me from this was teaching, and what better way to begin than moving to another country because I love to travel. I was off to Seoul, South Korea teaching pre-school, kindergarten, elementary, and middle school students involving twenty-six classes requiring much adaptation and learning quickly. As with my fellow volunteers, I did my best to keep students happy by teaching them something new to share with others. Watching a child comprehend new information and discover themselves under my guidance was priceless.
Being an intern with Southface will require every skill I have learned and practiced so far, plus I will learn a new area of education involving sustainable building science, research, and design. Southface is the perfect opportunity for me to balance the field of constructing houses with educating myself and the community.
The shift for people toward building smaller, but much more efficient homes is slowly overtaking us. The volunteers required information tailored to their needs, as much as the young kids I taught in Korea needed this. Information matters when it is presented as relevant to our times and conditions. I hope and dream each and every day to become part of the solution and inspire people to build homes that are creative, interdependent, and off-the-grid.
I believe that my experience with Southface will benefit both of us. I will apply diligence, open-eyed confidence, and determination on my quest to become a leader in energy and environmental design (LEED). Southface generously provides the opportunity to start my career as a Home Energy Rater (HERS) with all the expertise possible while being an intern. I have searched for teachers, mentors, and an institute to make this dream happen. I have come a long way tailoring my current work to my future work and continuing to challenge myself and other people along the way because the good thing about this life is the journey, not the destination.

The Ultimate Trade Show Directory (HVAC Comfortech is coming very soon - air conditioning is awesome) Whoa baby! There's a "Green + Design Conference" happening in early October - it's a must go! I'll try and have cards made up with this blog listed on them by then. This is just actually the beginning. I must start keeping a better calendar or I'll miss some of these! Coming across this website is amazing... hope you like it.
Twine is very, very cool and I must keep up with my account more! There are tons of information to sort and sift through on there and I've only been through the green side of the site. There's tons and eventually they'll start recommending news... Here are a list of the items I've kept on the site. Maybe I should start my own twine soon.
This is only the beginning of the stuff I've kept. I'll find other things and post them as regularly as I can.
Southface On My Mind
What else is cool about the opportunity is the "Home Building School." I have three weeks to start and I'm hoping I get this training free as well.
Look forward to helping prep that class as well. It's going to be cool to learning all this new awesome information. One day I'll teach you how to build your own home and I'll do it with you. Building Science is the only thing I'd ever go to Grad School for and this internship might inspire that in me... looking forward to seeing what's out there.
This would be a good time to say that I've worked for Habitat for Humanity before through Americorps. Thank goodness for the education stipend I can use for learning some of this new stuff that Southface can't guarantee (energy auditing is for me). Research and plenty of hands-on information is what I'm expecting to learn. I'll chronicle as much as I can through this blog of course.

Living the News
The first was because I attended the local Democrat Party's "Democratic National Convention" speech night. Couldn't stay and listen to Obama because of the Tour of Wurdz afterwards, but I did hear Gore and listen to Stevie Wonder. There was a random photo taken of me at posted on the Clarksville Online Blog, and then you can see my red cowboy hat in the background of the folks who want Obama as President.
After that event, I went to the Tour of Wurdz and I was mentioned in an article ran in the Leaf Chronicle (the local paper) the day of the show. Both of these issues I feel strongly about - Obama and spoken word. You know he won two Grammys for his spoken word albums from both of his books on audio?
In other news, one of the first things I was going to blog about was the following news on the front page of the local paper. Military and zero energy housing is going up in Fort Campbell soon. Interesting, they are going to need people of my occupation that I'm about to start, love to see even the slightest of opportunity (even though I won't be living around here!). I haven't even truly opened my eyes to the National and World opportunities available soon. Very good times indeed.
SnagFilms
The main reason Snagfilms really fits with this blog is the fact that so far I've watched two episodes of a PBS Series about Design, green building and permaculture focused design that is. It's called (e squared). The idea of super efficient buildings really inspires me. What's happening in China these days really hits me hard. I can't wait to one day go there, even face the pollution for the chance to work in efficiency housing design and implementation. These shows are a great revelation for anyone who hasn't heard of McDonough or Cradle to Cradle yet. I do have to admit that I admire McDonough a lot and it seems like such a wonderful revolutionary job and truly inspiring. You'll probably read me saying it over and over, but I love TED (Technology Entertainment Design ideas worth spreading).
First Blog = Big Deal
Note: Most of the only people who will even read this is because you know me, or just met me recently and I had to tell you to find something on this blog or I might just chronicle stuff for future conversations and essays, either way it's a win/win situation for all of us.
Let's also establish some rules of my blog. I'm a dreamer and an optimist, but live and breathe extensive research and gut feelings. I'm obsessed with knowing the right answer to my questions and knowing the ends and outs of everything. This blog will help me note the moments I'm living in, as well as, most everyone else if they picked up that wavelength. I'm human, so please stay as open minded as you possibly can and neither one of will butt heads. Opinions are always exciting, so please share yours, but stay constructive, alright?
Let me know you're here sometimes and feel free to email me at any time.
I love new people, so this means you too.
Secretly I obsess a great amount of things, so I'm not as specialized enough as I want, so this is another reason I have started this beautiful part of my life that I like to call "Obsessed With Energy" right now. This blog is all about interdependent building structures, construction technology, news that I find interesting for one reason or another (please read everything when you start) and all things sustainable. It's okay if you don't want to read and/or watch everything, but please take a chance sometimes and see what happens.
There are many hobbies that fascinate me, and even more people who do. The search for a mentor, and a great teacher have begun. I'm mostly interested in people who are much, much more intelligent and know more than I do, types.
The very cool thing that's happening lately is the fact I'm going to start an internship with Southface Energy Institute in Atlanta, Georgia, United States of America, that it crazy exciting to even contemplate all I'm going to learn and get myself enthralled with, but my enthusiasm and drive to learn and excel are second to none. I know myself pretty well at this time in the game. I'm here to set an example within my industry and get to know everything to the roots. I know what I want and I want this blog to inspire another person, it just takes one.
Without further ado, let me just say, get ready to rock.
